Endoscopy & colonoscopy

Endoscopy examines the upper digestive tract, colonoscopy the lower — both using a thin camera-equipped tube.

When this is typically needed

  • Persistent acidity or heartburn
  • Unexplained abdominal pain
  • Blood in stool
  • Family history of colon cancer (screening)

What it involves

Done under sedation; the procedure itself takes 15-45 minutes, preceded by prep instructions (fasting, and for colonoscopy, bowel prep).

What to expect

Most patients go home the same day; results and, if needed, biopsy findings follow within a few days.
